For more than three decades, Michael “Doctor Star” Edge-Partington has helped ensure Western Star customers receive the right truck for the right job through precise, application-driven chassis and frame design.

As a key member of Western Star’s Custom Applications Engineering team, Mike specializes in custom truck frame layout that allows customers to push their X-Series trucks to the limit. From heavy haul and vocational applications to highly specialized upfits, his work ensures every component is engineered, positioned, and spec’d to perform in the toughest conditions.

With more than 38 years of Western Star experience, Mike has become a trusted voice among dealers, upfitters and customers worldwide, earning him the nickname Doctor Star for his ability to diagnose complex challenges and deliver practical, build-ready solutions.

A LIFETIME OF WESTERN STAR APPLICATION ENGINEERING EXPERTISE

Mike’s passion for Western Star trucks goes way back. As a child, he grew up on his family’s dairy farm in Creston, BC, just two miles north of the Idaho border, where a 4900 tanker arrived weekly to pick up milk. This early exposure to agricultural transport connects closely to today’s specialized milk hauler trucks, which require precise engineering and reliable performance in demanding conditions. He later moved to Kelowna, BC, then the home base of Western Star.

With an interest in everything mechanical, he applied at Western Star and was hired as a record-keeper of truck builds, quickly learning the ins and outs of truck chassis.

In just a few years, Mike moved up to designing frame layouts. He recalls, “Depending on the spec, I would figure out where all the holes had to be drilled on the frame rails for fuel tanks, battery boxes, wheelbase, suspensions, you name it.”

Hard work and a natural talent for engineering is how Mike soon became the company’s youngest production supervisor at the age of 32, getting critical hands-on experience overseeing the assembly of truck frames.

In 2002, Western Star moved its manufacturing facilities to Portland, Oregon, and Mike was asked to come along. It was an offer he couldn’t refuse.

WHY THEY CALL HIM "DOCTOR STAR"

Michael “Doctor Star” Edge-Partington, a veteran application engineer, earned his nickname for his expertise in diagnosing complex truck challenges and delivering practical, build-ready solutions.

Mike was dubbed Doctor Star a quarter century ago following a week-long, 1,200-mile journey, visiting Western Star dealers. His knack for listening, learning, and offering workable remedies earned him a lot of respect and his new handle. “In my career, I’ve looked after every Western Star dealer on the planet,” he says.

With 38 years of Western Star experience under his belt, Mike is looked upon by dealers and customers as the go-to expert for application-specific frame layout design. He ensures all components are in the right spot for truck upfitting and each truck has the right specs to do the job.

X-SERIES INNOVATION BUILT FOR EXTREME APPLICATIONS

So, what’s the biggest advancement Mike has seen in his time at Western Star? The introduction of the X-Series in 2020. He was heavily involved in the early stages of product development, and he’s plenty proud of it, citing big advancements in the steel reinforcements, electrical components, and safety features.

“It was all about creating the right chassis and options to do the job, and the truck has been proving itself over and over.”

When assisting dealer needs, Mike likes to push the limits. “I was working on a heavy haul prime mover for a customer who needed to move one million pounds. That means one 49X pulling and two others pushing at the rear,” he says. Massive transformers filled with copper are some of the heaviest hauls performed by X-Series trucks.

Western Star X-Series trucks are built for extreme applications, including heavy haul, vocational work, and specialized upfits that require precise engineering and reliability under the toughest conditions.

Most recently, Mike was involved in a frame layout project for a monster, twin-steer, tri-drive wrecker with a set-forward axle. He is often faced with challenges prepping a truck with clear frame space inside, outside, or below the frame, and this job was no exception. Custom layouts like this allow upfitters to add components such as a hydraulic tank, air tank, or toolbox quickly and easily, ultimately saving the customer money on production time down the assembly line.

One of Mike’s most famous frame layouts was a 5700XE custom build for the 2014 Transformers: Age of Extinction moving for the one and only, Optimus Prime. At first, he didn’t know what he was getting into. “Our marketing department was sending me frame specs that didn’t make sense. Oh, it’s for a truck that turns into a giant robot? Then, it all made sense.” Transformers gave Western Star a blockbuster opportunity to pre-market its new 5700 semi-truck.

PREMIUM HEAVY HAUL AND VOCATIONAL TRUCKS, PREMIUM CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE

Mike believes Western Star has become a premium brand thanks to the premium customer experience. “Our Customer Applications Engineering team is committed to creating the perfect product for the application…the right truck for the right job,” he says.

“The customers love talking directly with our engineering experts. They feel they’re getting first-class service.”

When asked about his future at Western Star, Mike says, “I feel that I'm carrying the flag, and I want to keep that W going. I just want to make it grow.” He describes Western Star as “the little train that could,” which has garnered a lot of respect from the customer base.

“Our Star Nation is growing every day. They recognize a quality-built truck that can do the job in the toughest conditions, and people are willing to pay for it.”

GETTING THE WORD OUT

For nearly 22 years, Mike has regularly sent communications to a list of more than 1,200 Western Star dealers and partners, showcasing Western Stars which have mainly been X-Series since 2020, in real-world applications. “I may have gotten a C in high school English, but I get an A+ in Western Star pride,” he says. Mike is sure his “pick-of-the-week” showcase of awe-inspiring and sometimes outrageous configurations has helped to shape new perceptions of what the X-Series can be.

It's obvious that a passion for the Western Star product has kept Mike going strong on the job well into his sixties. “It’s all about the customer and going above and beyond to make sure they get what they want.” He may be best known as Doctor Star, but when it comes to pushing the limits of the X-Series, a more fitting alias may be “Never Back Down Mike.”
